This just annoys the hell out of me. Especially if I was on the receiving end of it:
"your friend has left the conversation"
Is that a downer or what?? To turn it off. Go to preferences -> Conversations tab -> Uncheck "Close IMs immediately when the tab is closed", and you are set. I have to say, that option is very poorly named.
