Live Code: Make a Programming Language From Scratch

In this session I do some code clean up, solve a code challenge from Code Wars, add regular expression literals and some string functions to the runtime as well as fix a broken part of the if statement.

01:31 : let's do some of this actually first
01:33 : before I started coding challenge I
01:35 : thought that I would do a little bit of
01:36 : code cleanup this this project
01:39 : repository is getting a little large
01:43 : there's a lot of file files here on the
01:47 : one hand I kind of like having a folder
01:50 : structure but on the other hand we just
01:52 : have a lot of examples here and it's
01:55 : getting a little ungainly so I thought I
01:57 : would make a folder for the code
02:00 : examples and I like having to type a lot
02:03 : so I'm gonna make the folder name really
02:06 : short I'm gonna call the folder e^x and
02:09 : then I'm just gonna move all my files my
02:12 : example files I should say into this e^x
02:16 : folder
02:17 : there they are and now display examples
02:26 : as well I also have this lecture file
02:30 : which I don't really need perhaps I just
02:33 : although it might be helpful for you
02:36 : guys to view our site I created this
02:38 : file and one of the episodes testing out
02:41 : the lexer I might leave this here or not
02:46 : because after all all the code is on
02:49 : github and version controlled I think
02:54 : I'm still gonna leave this here I'm just
02:56 : gonna put a comment right here and just
02:58 : say this is a test file for the okay so

05:18 : this one looks like I'm gonna change a
05:22 : snick paste string to camel case so
05:27 : let's give that a try some test cases

06:02 : no code as a result and just printer
06:08 : result I think try running this okay we
06:35 : wrote a to camel case X dot ast and then
06:39 : when we generated it we could not no
06:44 : such file or directory to camel case dot
06:48 : X dot ast that's a problem we might need
06:53 : to do some debugging here okay so then
06:56 : you see the cars file is supposed to
06:59 : have to have generated the ast file but
07:05 : the generator is saying that didn't
07:07 : exist and why did you print out you
07:09 : wrote to this file oh because it wrote
07:11 : it in the wrong directory okay so that's
07:15 : a problem
07:16 : yeah it wrote it in the outside
07:18 : directory so so we're actually not done
07:22 : fixing the system we need to fix the
07:24 : system now we have to need the directory
07:29 : name of the file and use that to output
07:36 : the resulting file okay so let's go

07:40 : code to generate the okay so I'm gonna

20:14 : a problem I have an unforeseen problem
20:18 : here the if statement that I have
20:24 : constructed actually it used to work
20:30 : because I had the if statement implement
20:33 : it as a function what I mean I have this
20:39 : GS file at the top level I'll go fix
20:43 : that later I previously I had an if
20:46 : statement implemented as a function and
20:48 : I caught a dollar function and that
20:52 : worked because it could return a value
20:56 : and which is what I did but now actually
20:59 : changed it and maybe if generate a
21:08 : generating an actual in statement in
21:10 : JavaScript and part of me is kind of
21:14 : thinking I made a mistake doing that and
21:18 : I own them I might want to go back and I
21:22 : think I will I'm gonna go back on my
21:24 : decision to generate a an if statement
21:30 : so I'm gonna change it back to when you
21:32 : when you write an if statement when
21:36 : you're reading if statement like this
21:37 : it's actually gonna generate a function
21:40 : call it's we're gonna generate a
21:44 : function call to the if function
21:47 : and it'll actually the if function will
21:50 : actually take sort of 2-1 conditional
21:58 : and then two functions to arrow
22:02 : functions as its argument like this and
22:07 : and it will always return either the
22:10 : return value of this part or the return
22:13 : value of this part and therefore the if
22:15 : function will always have a return value
22:18 : so my code used to do that I changed it
22:24 : but I'm now I'm gonna change it back
22:26 : although I'm gonna still gonna keep this
22:29 : if syntax though still keeping this if
22:33 : syntax okay so which means I'm not
22:38 : changing the grammar at all the grammar

22:58 : this if statement in JavaScript I'm
23:03 : going to generate a call to this dollar

43:12 : is and that's a representation of the
43:14 : regex in JavaScript land so let's try it

43:19 : and now it did it and we generated the
43:23 : JavaScript down here which I'm gonna
43:26 : want to fix but did generate this
43:30 : regular expression and now if we run
43:32 : this it does work
43:40 : even with that it still works and that's
43:45 : beautiful
43:46 : ok so I think we solved a code challenge
43:50 : maybe maybe we should write some more
43:54 : tests for it but you know we solved the
44:02 : code challenge so let me do a couple of
44:03 : clean up clean up so first of all I'm
44:08 : gonna have the generator January into
44:10 : the same directory using the same der
44:17 : baster technique using path that their
44:24 : name of the file name and then appending
44:27 : that to the name of this file using half
44:36 : so that I'm gonna delete this top-level
44:39 : javascript file and hopefully when i run
44:47 : using run - yes it will run everything
44:55 : correctly but it didn't and I think
44:58 : that's because in my run jeaious I'm
45:02 : gonna need to use the same technique
45:04 : here

48:37 : great so I solved the code challenge and
48:41 : I did a couple of other clean up things
48:43 : with this language along the way I think
48:47 : that's a good place to end this session
48:51 : here I mean think about what else to do
48:56 : for this language I already did this one
49:01 : and the index notation might be good I'm
49:06 : thinking about Unicode support like so
49:08 : that you can use emojis for your
49:14 : variable names or like another language
49:18 : name your variable names in another
49:20 : language like Chinese or something
49:23 : classes I think would be fun to do
49:26 : actually because actually haven't
49:29 : implemented object or India or object
49:32 : oriented classes in a language before I
49:36 : don't think it'll be hard in terms of in
49:40 : to do it in this language when you're
49:43 : just translating to JavaScript the the
49:47 : way to encode classes in JavaScript is
49:49 : very straightforward jobs get more or
49:52 : less already have classes if you even if
49:55 : you don't want to use the new class
